Police appeal

The text is describing what happened in a recent incident of crime it shows clear and formal language throughout. With brief explanation of what happened in the incident.

Grammar is used effectively throughout the whole text, it’s very blunt and formal grammar, with limited punctuation. Providing the idea that the author wants the text to be straight to the point. The description of the incident is very brief and mainly factual; however, the text does show post modification when saying that it was “four men of oriental appearance “This description is used to inform the reader and provide them with an image of whom the robbers may be. This is included in the text to keep the people safe, as they know what to look out for, but also to help the police have a closer chance of catching the robbers. The phase “POLICE APPEAL-CAN YOU HELP?” is the header on the text, this is a clear and direct phrase to show the reader exactly what is desired from the author.

Graphology is also used to create an abrupt and blunt presentation to the text. For example, the text lay out is in short sentences, almost like bullet points. This accompanies the bold starter phrase, when applying to the effectiveness to the reader. The text has been laid out this way to have more of an appeal to the reader, if its in smaller sentences spaced out, it looks easier to read in comparison to it being a paragraph. When describing the effectiveness of the main headers in the text the typographical features, provide many examples which emphasise the reason for the appeal. For example, bigger font than the rest, and some underlined, and the orthographical feature of capitalisation. It’s almost as if the author is using every possible way to try and portray the importance of the appeal. Effecting the reader in a way where your eyes are drawn to the text, having a more likely hood of people reading it.

Another language level used is pragmatics, the text all around is very formal and polite. This language feature is used because of the context of why the appeal has been written. The appeal is there for people to try and help the police, if the pragmatics of the text were rude, the amount of people to respond would definitely decrease. The overall politeness is very effective when considering the outcome of the appeal.
