Why swearing is effing brilliant!
Do you ever accidently
stub your toe? Or even really struggle to open a jar of gherkins? The only words
to properly express your anger is through swearing right? Shouting “F**K” to
the top of your lungs until you finally get a real grip of that jar. Well, people
may think that it’s a sign of anger, or limited vocabulary, but in fact it
shows the opposite of that.
Studies have
shown that swearing actually shows more intelligence in a person. This is
because it demonstrates a richer vocabulary than those who don’t use taboo
language. Contradictory to the common perception that one shalt not use such
unholy language. It shows you’re more bloody smarter so, why not! Using this
language that is most frequently frowned upon, can also help with being very
creative with your sentences. For example, ‘fan-f*****g-tastic’ rather than
fantastic, can you see how much more emphasis that shows? Just by adding one
word!
There have
been many investigations on how and why swearing is good for us, and some discovered
that it actually may use a different part of the brain- influencing some to
believe that people who swear are smarter. The basis of this investigation was
that the left hemisphere of the brain oversees language, and the right creates
the emotional context of language. However, studies have suggested that the brain
processes swearing in the emotion and instinct part of the brain. Weird right? Who
would have thought that calling someone a t**t was emotional?
Emphasis is
something we all crave when producing our vocabulary, and sometimes a simple,
boring explanation mark just doesn’t quite do it. Obvious English people… never
fully pleased. That is why swearing is a
huge part in expressing emotions across, whether one is sad or happy, taboo
language is personally adjusted to fit the conversation.
Science has
shown that swearing is also a massive stress reliever, and increases adrenalin in
the body, therefore a lot of athletes shout phrases like; “s**ting hell” when
exercising. Its also used as a coping mechanism, even though humans have a tendency
to adapt to almost any situation, studies show that swearing helps us to
distract our minds to the situation one is in.
The stereotypical
perspective of people who swear has changed throughout history. Back in the
1900s women who swore were seen as ‘unladylike’ with no class. In some cases,
it was incredibly frowned upon, in modern society nowadays there are people who
despise swearing. Yet, a lot of people have said that swearing now shows power
and controllability of a situation… oh how times have changed.
If this doesn’t
make you want to go and tell your boss or teachers to “f**k off” I don’t know
what will!
